New York barmen, taxi drivers and policemen may labor too hard to give the impression of having seen it all before. But there is always a nagging suspicion that they actually have.

Christopher Hitchens on New York, his adopted home.

Hitch died from pneumonia, a complication of the throat cancer he was suffering from, at a Texan hospital yesterday. He was 62.

In memoriam Steve Jobs. The end of an era mourned at Union Square Apple Store, San Francisco.

The question repeated in the crowd was, “Who’s going to do this now? Who will push and shove technology and worldviews to at least try and make this place a bit better than when they found it?” We’re just all incredibly sad to see you go. It is truly hard to imagine the world being a better place without you.

Thanks, Steve

Even though countless stories have been and will now continue to be written about Jobs’ legacy, this Fortune article written back in 2009 is still an inspiring read. In it, Larry Ellison, CEO of Oracle and long-time friend, says of Steve:

He’s a visionary, but he’s grounded in reality too, closely monitoring Apple’s various operational and market metrics. He isn’t motivated by money.

Here are a few of my favorite Steve quotes:

“Here’s to the crazy ones, the misfits, the rebels, the troublemakers, the round pegs in the square holes… the ones who see things differently — they’re not fond of rules… You can quote them, disagree with them, glorify or vilify them, but the only thing you can’t do is ignore them because they change things… they push the human race forward, and while some may see them as the crazy ones, we see genius, because the ones who are crazy enough to think that they can change the world, are the ones who do.”

“Your time is limited, so don’t waste it living someone else’s life.”

Remembering that you are going to die is the best way I know to avoid the trap of thinking you have something to lose. You are already naked. There is no reason not to follow your heart. Stay hungry. Stay foolish.”

RIP Steven Paul Jobs 1955-2011. Thank you for being a brilliant inspiration to so many.

You’re my hero and always will be. You are already sorely missed.
